Vietnam – Saudi Arabia to negotiate visa exemption agreement

Vietnam Saudi Arabia to negotiate visa exemption agreement

Vietnam-Saudi Arabia cooperative relationship has been promoted but it is not on par with each country’s potential. Therefore, both countries need to make greater efforts to realize their opportunities for cooperation.

This was stated at the first session of the Vietnam – Saudi Arabia joint committee on economic, scientific and technological cooperation, co-chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Duong Quang and Saudi Arabian Deputy Minister of Economics and Planning Ahmed Bin Ibrahim Al Hakami.

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed their relationship and proposed solutions to strengthen cooperation in trade, oil and gas, industrial and agricultural production, finance, banking, transportation, investment, construction and labour.

They emphasised the need to establish a mechanism to ensure food and energy security, with a focus on Saudi Arabia investing in Vietnamese agriculture to supply rice for the west Asian countries and supplying crude oil to Vietnam.

Deputy Minister Quang asked Saudi Arabia to recognise Vietnam’s market economy; implement the protocol on oil, gas and mineral cooperation, which was signed in April 2010; and help Vietnam build oil refineries and power plants. He also recommended promoting trade exchange between the two countries.

Deputy Minister Ahmed Bin Ibrahim Al Hakami asked both sides to take initiatives to help the business communities in both countries to expand cooperation for mutual benefit.

Specific plans for the cooperation should be carried out effectively, he said.

The two countries are negotiating agreements on visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders, protecting and encouraging investment, air transportation, an agreement between the two foreign ministries and another between the two central banks.

Saudi Arabia is now Vietnam’s biggest West Asian trade partner with trade turnover reaching US$284 million in 2010. Vietnam’s main exports to Saudi Arabia are seafood, tea, coffee, pepper, cashew nuts, rice, textiles, garments, and wood products while it imports plastic materials, liquefied gas, chemicals and related products, fertilizers, and animal feeds.

Vietnam the most affordable destination for Australian tourists

Asia has overtaken Europe as the new hotspot for Australian travellers seeking a bang for their buck, a study has revealed.

vietnam best destination Vietnam the most affordable destination for Australian tourists

Vietnam rocketed to the top of the latest Expedia HiFX Foreign Exchange Index, which measures currency fluctuations against the Australian dollar to find the best-value destinations for travellers.

The dollar appreciated by more than 23 per cent against the Vietnamese dong in the past year, leading to the spike.

Samoa and Argentina also performed well, with the dollar appreciating by over 19 per cent against the Samoan tala and nearly 18 per cent against the Argentinean peso.

Hong Kong, the UAE, India and Peru also made the list for the first time.

The results are in contrast to the last Expedia index in September, which was dominated by European nations.

Hungary, Latvia, Denmark, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and the Czech Republic were among the top value-for-money destinations last year but failed to make this year’s list.

Coming in at number six on this year’s list, the US still provides great value for money for Australian travellers.

Despite not making the top 10 list, both the Eurozone countries and the UK are quite affordable, with the Aussie dollar appreciating close to 7 per cent against the Euro and just over 5 per cent against the British pound in the past year.

“The strength of the Australian dollar against so many of the world’s currencies, not least the US dollar, provides Aussie travellers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to head overseas and make use of the amazing exchange rate and deals,” Louise Crompton, Senior Manager Marketing for Expedia Australia and New Zealand, said.

The findings are in contrast to where Australians are actually travelling to. According to Travel.com.au our favourite world cities for 2011 are London, Los Angeles, Bali, Bangkok, Auckland, Singapore, Paris, Manila, Hawaii and Phuket.

Meanwhile New Zealand, the US, Indonesia, the UK, Thailand, Fiji and China were the most popular travel destinations during 2010, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.

Diplomatic visa exemption accord signed with El Salvador

An agreement on visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passport holders from Viet Nam and El Salvador was signed in Ha Noi yesterday after successful talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries.

El Salvador Diplomatic visa exemption accord signed with El Salvador

During the talks, Pham Gia Khiem, who doubles as Deputy Prime Minister, and his El Salvador guest Hugo Martinez Bonilla agreed that the two countries should further tap their potential in consumer goods production, agriculture, science and technology, culture, healthcare, education and training, and telecommunications to scale up currently modest economic relations.

The two also agreed on mutual assistance to expand El Salvador’s relations with other countries in Southeast Asia and the same for Viet Nam in Central America.

Khiem and Bonilla pointed out the need to speed up negotiations and sign a number of co-operation accords soon in order to lay the foundation for a legal framework on bilateral relations, especially in economics, trade and investment.

They said measures should be taken to encourage and create favourable conditions for businesses from both sides to take a foothold in each other’s markets and establish direct partnerships.

Host and guest shared a view on promoting the exchange of delegations at all levels to deepen political relations, increase mutual understanding and work out measures for co-operative efficiency.

They also agreed that the two countries should continue with close co-ordination of action and mutual assistance in international organisations and multilateral forums such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation and the Forum of East Asia and Latin America Co-operation (FEALAC).

The two foreign ministers highlighted close relations, particularly with Bonilla inviting Khiem to visit El Salvador, which he accepted with pleasure.

In addition to the visa exemption agreement, the talks concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on establishing a reference mechanism between the two foreign ministries.

China, Vietnam Mull Construction of Visa-free Tourism Zone

China and its neighbor Vietnam are considering building a visa-free tourism zone on the border of the two countries, tourism authorities said Wednesday.

mong cai city China, Vietnam Mull Construction of Visa free Tourism Zone

Mong Cai City in Quang Ninh, Vietnam

The visa-free zone will include Dongxing City in southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Mong Cai City in northern Vietnam, said Yu Xiaojun, deputy chief of the Guangxi’s tourism bureau.

Tourists, and their vehicles, from China and Vietnam will not be required to have a visa or permit to enter the zone, he said.

The two cities have already worked out a blueprint, currently awaiting both countries’ approval, Yu said, without giving a time frame.

Once given the go ahead, the project will take five to ten years to take shape, said Zhu Shengyong, Party chief of Dongxing City.

On Monday, Dongxing City completed the construction of the largest marketplace on the China-Vietnam border, which is located on the east bank of the Peilum River, facing Mong Cai.

The 51-hectare market, costing 2 billion yuan (305 million U.S. dollars), includes border trade wharfs, import and export facilities and various commodity markets.

In 2010, China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) established the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, which eliminates tariffs on 90 percent of products traded between China and ASEAN member countries.

Travellers to south-east Asia could get single visa

A group of nine south-east Asian countries may soon be offering a unified visa, similar to the one currently available in Europe.

Adventurous tourists think of booking flights to Thailand may be excited to learn that they could soon get a single visa allowing access to several other south-east Asian nations as well.

Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia are among the countries joining Thailand in considering the new system, AFP reports.

asean 300x300 Travellers to south east Asia could get single visaThe Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is said to be developing a plan, which is similar to the unified European visa, leading to easier travel between member countries.

As a result, travellers would be easily be able to string together a tour including surfing in Bali, exploring the historic temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and shopping in Bangkok.

ASEAN countries welcomed more than 65 million foreign visitors in 2009, and other member nations include the Philippines, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei.

In its recent five-year strategic plan, the organisation acknowledged the difficulty of travelling around south-east Asia.

“One of the major concerns of visitors is the difficulty of obtaining visas, a series of widely differing regulations and information needs for visas,” the report said.
