Visa Exemption for Vietnamese People Residing Abroad

More than 3.2 million Vietnamese are currently living and working in more than 100 countries and territories in the world. Regardless of where they currently reside,  all the sons and daughters of the Vietnamese nation long to one day return to their motherland to reunite with family, friends and loved ones.

In understanding the Vietnamese community abroad as inseparable sections of the Vietnamese nation, Resolution 36-NQ/TW of the CPV Politburo on overseas Vietnamese affairs was proposed “to create favorable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to come back, visit their homeland and relatives, and worship their ancestors”.

In carrying out Resolution 36-NQ/TW, during his official visit to the United States of America, President Nguyen Minh Triet, at a meeting with overseas Vietnamese, announced Decision No. 135/2007/QĐ-TTg, the Regulations on Vietnam Visa Exemption for Vietnamese People Residing Abroad.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dzung signed Decision No. 135/2007/QĐ-TTg on 17/08/2007.

For all Vietnamese residing abroad to clearly understand the new policy and to also assist them with the application process, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided on-line access to valuable up-to-date information.

Who is eligible for Vietnam visa tourist?

Vietnam visa tourist, also known as B2 visa is granted for foreign tourists who want to travel to Vietnam. People apply for this kind of visa have to meet the following criteria.

1. Your visit must be for pleasurable purposes.

Pleasurable purposes includes activities of a recreational character including tourism, amusement, visits with friends or relatives, rest, medical treatment and activities of a fraternal or social nature

2. You must plan to stay for a limited, specific period of time

3. You must be able to demonstrate binding ties to your home country to assure that you return home

4. You must be able to pay for your trip and stay

5. You must have permission to return home or to another country after expiration of your trip.

Vietnam visa

Tourist visa A tourist visa is usually valid for 1 month, allowing single or multiple entry.

Business Visas A business visa is usually valid for 3 month, allowing single or multiple entry and the right to work. Getting a business visa has now become cheap and easy, although the prices are about double those of a tourist visa.

Student visas A student visa is usually arranged after your arrival. It’s acceptable to enter Vietnam on a tourist visa, enroll in a Vietnamese language course and then apply at the immigration police for a change in status. In reality, the easiest way to do it is to contact a travel company and have them help you make the application.

Transit visa (or visa for city visiting): The maximum duration of this type of visa is 5 days. The Immigration Department will issue transit visa for groups in tour, accompanied with a tour guide. The group must have exact itinerary and have guarantee of a travel agency which organizing the tour.

Vietnam immigration policy for processing Vietnam visa

Foreigners, who stay in Vietnam more than 1 year and want to ask for a temporary residence card, are suggested to send the temporary residence card to the Vietnam Immigration Office or Police Immigration Management of Cities/Provinces under Central authority.

  • Procedures provided for asking to issue visa, extending, supplementing, visa modifying and asking for temporary residence   certificate:

Foreigners would like to ask to issue, extend, supplement, modify visa and temporary residence certificate do need submit records to the Vietnam Immigration Office or Police Immigration Management of Cities/Provinces under Central authority.

  • If asking to issue visa, extending, supplementing, modifying visa, asking for temporary residence certificate are for tourism, the Vietnam international tourism companies -behalf of customers – will be responsible for dealing with Vietnam Immigration Office or Police Immigration Management of Cities/Provinces under Central authority.
  • If extending, supplementing, modifying visa, asking for temporary residence certificate are for the individuals such as: family visit, marriage, child adoption, treatment … the application must be confirmed by the ward, commune or shelter agencies which has jurisdiction.
  • Procedure provided for asking to issue visa in case of losing passport:

In case your passport is lost in Vietnam, you do need immediately report to the ward, commune where your passport was lost or contact the diplomatic representatives, your Embassy or Consulate in Vietnam to ask for a new passport or other documents that can be used as a valid passport. And then, you should apply for the new Vietnam visa.

  • Procedures provided for staying purpose conversion:

Foreigners who want to convert their purpose of staying in Vietnam must be approved by agencies, organizations or individuals as a guarantee to complete all the procedures in Vietnam Immigration Office or Police Immigration Management of Cities/Provinces under Central authority (where the agencies, organizations or individuals guarantee).

  • Procedures for temporary residence card:

Foreigners staying in Vietnam more than 1 year who would like to ask for a temporary residence card are suggested to send the temporary residence card to the Vietnam Immigration Office or Management immigration police Cities/ provinces of Central authority

Vietnam visa approval letter

What is the “visa approval letter”?

“Visa approval letter” is the letter approved by Vietnam Immigration Department (Vietnam Government), which allows you to enter and exit Vietnam for a given period. With the approval letter, you can get Vietnam visa at Vietnam international airports.
Normally, after 1 working day (urgent service) or 2-3 working days (normal service), you will get the approval letter for Vietnam visa as per you request.
Notes:
- We will arrange Vietnam visa upon arrival if there’s no special request.
- Your visa request will be processed within 2 working days

Can I use this approval letter for entering Vietnam by land?

No, this type of visa is applicable to air travel only. Three international airports in Vietnam that you can get your stamp with this approval letter are: Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) and Danang Airport.

Vietnam – Entry and Customs procedure

Customs procedures in Vietnam are quick and simple. To enter and exit Vietnam, visitors are required to fulfill the entrance and exit procedures in the form (in Vietnamese or in English languages). Luggage of people on entry (including clothes, personal belongings with reasonable quantity in service of the trip’s purpose) must be declared in case as follows:

  • Luggage exceeds duty free concessions
  • Luggage sent before or after trips
  • Professional equipment temporarily imported and re-exported or vice versa;
  • Addictive medicines
  • Other medicines exceed 30 USD in value
  • Foreign currency exceeds 7,000 USD (seven thousand US dollars), or its equivalence other foreign currency, or over 15,000,000 VND (fifteen million Vietnam Dong), in cash.
  • Goods prohibited to import: weapons, ammunition, explosives, military technical equipment, drugs, toxic chemicals, debauched and reactionary products, firecrackers of all kinds, toys with negative impacts on the dignity education, social security and safety, cigarettes beyond the stipulated quantity, etc.
  • Goods prohibited to export: weapons, ammunition, , military technical equipment, antiques, drugs, toxic chemicals, wild animals, rare and precious animals and plants, documents related to the national security by the State Bank.
  • Duty free concessions for the baggage of arriving passengers
  • For liquor: Liquor at 22o and above: 1.5 litres; Liquor below 22o: 2.0 litres; Alcoholic beverage: 3.0 litres.
  • For cigarettes and cigars: Cigarettes: 400 pieces; Cigar: 100 pieces; Tobacco: 500 g
  • For tea, coffee: Tea: 5 kg, Coffee: 3 kg
  • For Clothes, personal belongings: With reasonable quantity in service of the trip’s purpose
  • Articles other than those mentioned at item above (outside the list of goods banned from import): Total value exceeds 5,000,000 VND.
  • Notes: Foreigners on entry carry luggage, which exceeds the duty-free quotas, presents and gifts with the total value not exceeding VND 1,000,000 (one million) shall be exempt from taxes.

Visa Extension Fee

Currently, with the aim of getting more and more opportunities to support our valued clients, Vietnam-Visa.com has developed visa extension/renewal services for those who have been in Vietnam. To extend/renew your Vietnam visa, you are kindly advised to follow the following steps:

Step 1. Please send us your scan of your passport and the page containing your current Vietnam visa to our email support@vietnam-visa.com. Then we will send it to Vietnam Immigration Department to check your information before extending/renewing your visa.

Step 2. We will inform you about the visa extension fee and whether your visa can be extended/renewed as visa extension varies for each case.

Step 3.- For those who are in Hanoi, please bring your original passport to our office:
- In case, you are in Ho Chi Minh City, please let us know your current address so that our staff will come in person to pick up your passport there.

Important Notes:

• You’d better extend/renew your visa at least 1 week (for 3 months visa, preferably 2 weeks) before your visa expiration date

• Before you apply for visa extension, your passport must have 2 blank pages at maximum.

• For tourist and business Visa, the extension/renewal is only applicable for 1 month or 3 months (single/ multiple)

• For Diplomatic, Official visas, or/and other types of visa, it should be applied through the official agencies or government or business sponsor or contact the Vietnam Immigration Department in person.

1. Service fee

2. Stamping fee

To get your visa stamped at Vietnam Airports, you pay directly to the Immigration officers by cash (in USD or VND) at Immigration Desk/Counter.

Service fee and stamping fee

Visa Service fee is the fee paid online to us by you in advance to get your Visa Approval Letter issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department. The prerequisite is that our company guarantees for you at the Immigration Dept., and accordingly, your Vietnam visa is automatically sent from the Dept. to your arrival airport’s Immigration controlling network. After receiving this approval letter, you bring it to the airport in Vietnam, pay some “Stamping fee” there, and get your visa stamped.

Visa stamping fee is the fee that must be paid directly by you to the Immigration at your arrival airport. This fee is charged for the Immigration to get your visa itself printed out, glued (or stamped) onto your passport and sealed, after double checking your visa approval letter. The visa is stamped onto your passport only if all the information in your approval letter is exactly as in your passport.
